Communities in Schools of Hampton Roads
ENGAGE: The Critical Role of Engagement in Dropout Prevention
On a recent morning, leaders of Communities in Schools of Hampton Roads, the local chapter of the national group founded by Bill Milliken, joined members of the community and students at a breakfast to raise awareness of the need for bringing the community directly into the schools in order to engage high school students and prevent dropping out before graduation. CIS has now expanded into Virginia Beach Public Schools, and now serves that city as well as Hampton, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Portsmouth. Students who had been helped by CIS gave moving testimony about their experiences. Bill Milliken spoke about his own struggles as a student and his desire to give others their well deserved opportunity at an education. Newly appointed Executive Director Hope Sinclair is eager to get everyone educated, connected and engaged. To volunteer or donate, please call (757) 580-7966 or email Sinclairh@cisofva.org.
